About Head Start Healthy Families Project

The Healthy Families Grant received by Douglass Community Services through Head Start provides assistance to low income families with children 5 years old and under.   The purpose of the Douglass Community Services Head Start Healthy Families project is to provide a model for assisting parents, and/or future parents, to obtain the knowledge and skills needed to create a stable environment for raising their children and practice behaviors that support a healthy marriage relationship. 

The focus of the grant is Family Relationships and helping individuals learn to assess the health of their own marriage and/or relationship and then develop strategies for strengthening it.  Program overview and issues addressed include:

·        Attending 8 workshops during a 3-month period

·        Marriage and/or Relationship Health

·        Building stronger relationships within our families

·        Coping with everyday demands that all families face through stress and anger management

·        Communication Skills

·        Domestic Violence

·        Parenting Suggestions – Nationally recognized Love & Logic will be made available to interested individuals

·        Family budgeting suggestions

·        Connecting families with outside resources including family counseling, which is not mandatory but available if requested

·        Families sharing suggestions/experiences with one another in a support type group

·        Rewards are included throughout the program

There is no cost to eligible participants. Meals/snacks are provided, transportation assistance, and child care available as needed.
