DOUGLASS COMMUNITY SERVICES

PROGRAMS

Mission to Serve Northeast Missouri

Douglass has expanded its service area to include eight counties in Northeast Missouri. Those counties are Marion, Ralls, Monroe, Lewis, Pike, Shelby, Macon, and Randolph. A considerable number of personnel are required to provide services to the children, families, and individuals touched by Douglass Community Services. Currently DCS carries approximately 140 employees on its payroll, which is over 3.3 million dollars annually plus benefits of over $1,128,000. The combination of funds administered by Douglass Community Services totals over 10 million dollars annually.

Because of Douglass’ unique mission statement, organizational structure, and place in the community, it continues to reach out to people in ways that other organizations may not be able to. It continues to create new opportunities for community service to many people each year by means of new and innovative approaches to community education and outreach. The agency’s board of directors and staff look forward to the time that there will eventually be no need for the services provided. But as long as such need exists, Douglass will continue working to build “stronger communities by helping people help themselves.”

OUR PROGRAMS

KIM | KIDS IN MOTION

A pre-employment, summer program for youth in grades 5 and 6, Kids in Motions is a two-week intensive program where youth learn about various careers that are locally available. Youth learn the skills and education needed for each occupation. During their time in program they also spend some time volunteering with non-profits.

Ways to help: If you own or manage a business, volunteer to let the KIM youth visit and learn about employment opportunities offered. Financial contributions support the program.

CASA | COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES

Ways to help: Volunteer to be a CASA. Help the CASA program raise local funds and awareness to keep the program in our community.

HEAD START | EARLY HEAD START

The nation’s premier early childhood education program, Head Start works with the whole family to break the cycle of poverty. Children receive educational and cultural experiences. Family Resource Advocates work with families to help them achieve goals to self-sufficiency.

Ways to help: Volunteer in a Head Start classroom. Donate classroom supplies.

FOSTER GRANDPARENTS

Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and friends to children with exceptional needs. The program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities. Volunteers can work as one-on-one classroom aids, as mentors in workforce placements, and as a homework helpers. Volunteers must be 55 years of age and will receive a small stipend, if income eligible.

RSVP

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) gives volunteer opportunities to persons age 55 and older. By donating their time and bringing their life experience to the table, volunteers play a vital role in building stronger communities.

Volunteer Teri Zeiger echoes the sentiments of many of her fellow volunteers when she says, “I just love helping people. Whether it’s in the Thrift Store or the Food Pantry, it’s all about helping Douglass to help others.”

Teri feels her strengths work well with filling the needs of the clients that come through the door each day. “I like to be an organizer, which helps when donations come in for the thrift store. I also like a fast-paced setting, which the food pantry can be at times.”

The Missouri Volunteer Commission recognized Teri with a statewide Show Me Service Award.

There are some 30 volunteers who give of their time and talents to serve the clients of the Nifty Thrifty. The thrift store hands out about $2,000 in free items every month, along with selling clothes and other items at greatly reduced prices.

TOYS FOR TOTS

We believe in the power of partnership. That's why we have teamed up with the Marine Corps Foundation to bring the joy of Christmas to over 1300 children in Northeast Missouri. Through this incredible partnership, we are able to provide Christmas gifts that stay right here in our local communities. At Douglass Community Services, our focus is on our kids and members of our community, making them feel welcome, needed, and preparing them to be an integral part of our vibrant community.

Ways to help: Join us in making a difference this holiday season by holding a toy drive or making a financial donation to help us purchase toys. You can also volunteer to fill Christmas wish lists or distribute toys, ensuring our kids and community members feel the warmth of the season. Together, let's spread joy and create a sense of belonging.
